From Russia, With Love

in Behind the Scenes

A number of Drysdales’ customers hail from far-flung places, where you might not expect cowboy boots and hats.

Such as Russia. Yes, Russia.

One of our Russian customers is Nikolay Dikhtyarenko, who lives in Rostov Oblast region of southwest Russia. He’s ordered merchandise from Drysdales more than a half-dozen times.

While corresponding with one of our call-center employees, Nikolay revealed he’s an artist. Not a paint-and-pencil artist, but one who makes his creations entirely on a computer.

Here’s one of his creations:

In an e-mail, Nikolay says he creates his artwork on a tablet computer, using an Adobe PhotoShop program.

He says he loves western movies. Here’s an illustration he created of a young John Wayne:

Nikolay said he grew up in a rural area that’s similar to America’s Great Plains. That’s another reason, he said, for his affinity for for the West and western clothing. During his childhood, he tended to cows, chickens, geese, and pigs.

He learned art the traditional way, on pencils and oil paints, before joining the Russian army.

He’s now an illustrator, creating works for books, games and advertising. Now that he works on a computer, Nikolay admitted he’s probably forgotten the “traditional” way of making art.

More of Nikolay’s artwork can be seen at his Live Journal account.
