Several months ago, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association gave its first endorsement for new pair of Wrangler jeans in decades — the Wrangler 20X Competition jeans for men.
The announcement was a big deal, since the PRCA had endorsed Wrangler’s legendary Original Cowboy Cut jeans shortly after they were introduced in 1947. Cowboy Cut jeans — also known as model 13MWZ — are still produced today and remain among Wrangler’s biggest sellers. And 13MWZ jeans will remain an official jean of the PRCA as well.
During the recent National Finals Rodeo, the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper checked on why PRCA and Wrangler made the addition of the Competition jeans:
Wrangler, which spent 18 months developing the new Competition jeans, rolled out the new PRCA-endorsed product because it was time to give the 1947 jeans a more fashion-forward look while re-calibrating the fit to accommodate an athlete with bigger thighs.
The Competition model has a 21st century look marked by a lower-riding waist, an extra-relaxed seat and thigh and a wider opening at the ankle to fit over boots. [...] The Competition also offers a feature not needed in 1947 – a cell phone pocket. [...]
“We wanted to refine the jeans for athletic builds,” said Jeff Chadwick, Wrangler Special Events director. “We try to come out with innovative products.”
Kaycee Feild, who wound up winning his second straight bareback bronc riding title at NFR, was signed on as one of the endorsers of the Competition jeans. Here is a video Wrangler produced about him:
Feild told the Review-Journal he wears the jeans for two weeks straight before washing them, and likes their “baggy,” comfortable fit.
The Competition jeans are called “01″ jeans, from its 01MWZ model number. The eye-catching red-and-white “01″ tag (shown at left) is placed on them them.
Drysdales offers two of those Competition jeans. One comes in a medium stonewash finish; the other in a River Wash dark stonewash.

As mentioned before, both jeans include leg openings that fit easily over western boots, and come with a relaxed fit in the seat, thigh, and knee for comfort and freedom of movement.
Both jeans include faded fabric and whiskers for a well-worn, fashionable look. The 4-by-4 1/2-inch watch pocket is ideally designed to hold most smartphones.
And both are made of 100% heavier-weight cotton denim for extra durability.
